Post by Displaay Type Foundry: A Typeface Bridging Typewriters and Contemporary Editorial Design
Three years after its origins as a master’s thesis project at UMPRUM, Post has officially evolved into one of the most ambitious typeface releases by Displaay Type Foundry. What began as Post Antikva, a research-driven exploration of text and typewriter typography by type designer Viktor Mizera, has grown into a comprehensive type system spanning four distinct families: Post, Post Mono, Post TW, and Post TW Mono.
Developed over three years of refinement, the project marks a significant shift for Displaay Type Foundry. Known primarily for expressive display typefaces, the foundry now turns its attention toward editorial and long-form reading environments, introducing a text-focused family designed for books, newspapers, magazines, interfaces, and contemporary publishing projects.
The foundation of Post lies in a deep investigation of historical text typefaces and typewriter aesthetics. Influences ranging from Tyfa Antikva and Fairfield to the iconic Courier are reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, resulting in a typeface that feels both familiar and distinctly original. Rather than replicating historical models, Post challenges conventional letter construction while preserving the qualities that make text highly readable.
A defining feature of the family is its contrast axis, which allows users to move between typewriter-inspired forms and more traditional serif structures within a unified system. Every family is available as a variable font and includes true italics, offering designers remarkable flexibility across different applications and visual tones.
The earliest inspiration for the project emerged from an unexpected source: a pixelated and glitched version of Courier discovered in Nicolas Bourriaud’s influential book Postproduction. From that initial reference, the typeface gradually evolved into a sophisticated system informed by twentieth-century text typography, typewriter letterforms, and extensive formal experimentation.
Throughout the design, particular attention is given to the defining characteristics that make each letter immediately recognizable. By emphasizing these essential visual cues, Post achieves a rare balance between personality and functionality. The typeface performs confidently at large display sizes, where its unique construction becomes more apparent, while maintaining excellent legibility in dense editorial settings and extended reading experiences.
The project also reflects the approach of its creator. Since joining Displaay Type Foundry in 2023, Viktor Mizera has contributed to numerous custom and retail releases, bringing a strong technical perspective to the foundry’s growing catalogue. A graduate of the Type Design and Typography program at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, Mizera previously gained experience at Monotype and Briefcase Type Foundry, where he released his first typeface, Retroduktor.
With Post, Displaay Type Foundry demonstrates that a text typeface can be both highly functional and unmistakably expressive. By combining editorial precision, typewriter heritage, and contemporary experimentation, the family offers a versatile tool for designers seeking a typeface capable of handling everything from immersive reading experiences to striking typographic statements.
