Looking Beyond the Image: How dipshop Reimagined the Triennial of Photography Hamburg 2026

For the visual identity of the 9th Triennial of Photography Hamburg 2026, Cologne-based design studio dipshop challenged one of the festival’s most obvious visual conventions by creating a system that deliberately avoids using photographs. Instead, the studio built the identity around the invisible mechanics of photography itself, transforming technical artifacts into a distinctive graphic language.
Rather than relying on photographic imagery, the identity draws from three familiar but often overlooked phenomena: depth of field, lens flares, and burned film. These visual characteristics are usually considered byproducts of the photographic process rather than subjects of attention. dipshop repositioned them as the central elements of the festival’s communication, allowing the identity to reflect photography through its material qualities instead of its final images.

This conceptual shift encourages viewers to reconsider how photographs are perceived. By focusing on the elements that quietly shape visual experience, the identity redirects attention from representation to perception, revealing the structures that influence how images are created and understood. The result is a graphic system that feels both abstract and deeply connected to the photographic medium.
The approach also responds directly to the festival’s curatorial concept, which explores perspectives existing beyond dominant narratives. Just as the exhibition seeks to amplify overlooked voices, the identity highlights the peripheral aspects of photography that typically remain unnoticed. Through this parallel, the visual system becomes more than a branding exercise; it extends the exhibition’s intellectual framework into every point of communication.

Founded in Cologne, dipshop develops visual identities rooted in cultural research and contextual thinking. Its practice examines the relationship between content, audience, and environment, translating complex ideas into clear visual systems. For the Triennial of Photography Hamburg 2026, this methodology resulted in an identity that questions expectations while offering a thoughtful reflection on the medium itself, proving that photography can be represented without showing a single photograph.
