Shared Practice is a New York–based co-working and events space conceived by the brand-building firm Practice and opened in early 2024. Designed by creatives for creatives, the project responds to a clear need within the city’s creative community: a flexible, well-considered environment that adapts to the many ways creative work actually happens.
At its core, Shared Practice is built around the idea of reconfiguration. During the day, the space functions as a working studio, hosting designers, art directors, and independent creatives. In the evening, it transforms into a gathering place for talks, exhibitions, and workshops. Between these moments, it operates as a shared site for making—fluid, open, and responsive rather than fixed or prescriptive.

The architecture and layout reflect this philosophy. The open-plan space was designed for maximum flexibility, featuring collapsible, flat-pack furniture by New York–based designer Cody Melton. These modular elements can be easily moved or stored, allowing the floor to clear quickly for installations, panels, and community events. The result is an environment that supports both focused work and collective experience without privileging one over the other.
To mark the launch of Shared Practice, the team developed a visual identity closely connected to Practice’s existing brand. Rather than creating a standalone system, the identity intentionally builds on Practice’s established color palette, wordmark, and typographic language. This continuity reinforces the idea of Shared Practice as an extension of the studio’s ethos, not a departure from it.
Within this framework, new elements introduce a more playful and expressive tone. Hand-drawn iconography and lively line illustrations by UK-based illustrator William Luz bring warmth and spontaneity to the identity. The logotype itself embodies the concept of “making space,” flexing and shifting to accommodate illustrations or expanding into new dimensions altogether. This adaptive approach mirrors the physical space and reinforces the project’s core idea across every touchpoint.
The identity extends beyond the walls of the studio through a range of merchandise and printed materials, designed for everyday use within the space and for welcoming new members. These objects act as both functional tools and symbols of belonging, grounding the brand in daily creative practice.
Today, Shared Practice is home to the Practice team, the New York–based members of Swiss type foundry Grilli Type, and a small group of independent creatives working across brand design, art direction, and 3D. Alongside its resident members, the space hosts a diverse program of public and semi-public events, including art exhibitions, panel discussions, book launches, workshops, and wine tastings. Through this programming, Shared Practice positions itself as an adaptable platform for creative exchange rather than a traditional co-working model.
Behind the project is a multidisciplinary team led by Michelle Mattar, Founder and Creative Director of Practice, alongside senior designers Brit Diamond, Julia Ambrus, and Huiqi Fay Qiu, brand strategist and copywriter Makisa Bronson, and assistant to the founder Le Anne Ahern. Their collective approach reflects Practice’s broader philosophy as a firm that helps define and launch brands from 0 to 100 through close, long-term collaboration.

Shared Practice stands as a physical expression of that philosophy: thoughtful, flexible, and deeply rooted in process. More than a workspace, it is an evolving environment shaped by the people who use it—one that makes room for work, dialogue, and community in equal measure.
