BAEK: A Contemporary Korean Bakery Identity Inspired by Time and Tradition
For BAEK, an independent branding concept, Baghdad-based designer Zuhoor JS explores the connection between Korean baking traditions, craftsmanship, and the passage of time. The result is a thoughtful visual identity that transforms familiar bakery elements into a contemporary design language, celebrating the cultural heritage and handmade processes behind traditional Korean pastries.
At the heart of the concept is a hand-drawn clock, reimagined through a collection of illustrations featuring traditional Korean pastries, cakes, and baking objects. Replacing conventional hour markers, these elements create a visual metaphor for the time, patience, and dedication involved in baking. The clock also references the passing of recipes and techniques from one generation to another, establishing a meaningful connection between tradition and contemporary bakery culture.

This approach extends into the custom logotype, where irregular, hand-drawn letterforms reflect the organic qualities of handmade baked goods. A particularly distinctive detail appears in the letter K, whose construction subtly draws inspiration from Korean Hangul characters. This typographic reference introduces an additional cultural dimension while maintaining a playful and approachable visual personality.
The identity combines expressive illustration with a warm, minimal colour palette and carefully structured typography. This balance allows the more decorative elements to stand out without overwhelming the overall composition. The clock motif and its individual illustrations become adaptable graphic assets, appearing across packaging and other brand applications to establish a cohesive and recognisable visual system.

Rather than relying on conventional bakery aesthetics, BAEK builds its identity around a simple but evocative idea: time as an essential ingredient. Through illustration, lettering, and thoughtful visual storytelling, the project creates a dialogue between traditional Korean references and contemporary graphic design.
Developed independently in response to a fictional Instagram design challenge, BAEK demonstrates how a strong conceptual foundation can shape an entire brand identity, even beyond the context of a commercial brief.
The project was created by Zuhoor JS, an independent brand and visual designer based in Baghdad, Iraq. Specialising in visual identities, custom lettering, and packaging design, her practice focuses on concept-driven approaches that translate distinctive ideas into expressive and memorable visual systems.
